What's that about history repeating?

Spied on a t-shirt in downtown Brooklyn...

Yeah, that about covers it.

I am sorry, but I don't think there is any level on which you can compare Bush with Hitler.

Why, because he hasn't committed genocide? That's not all Hitler did, or all he stood for.

I can't claim this one, but it sums up what I was trying to say on another political blog entry, so I will credit it to the author. Dr Max
. He basically said what I was trying to say much more succinctly, which was "put up or shut up!"

"Irb, I used to think it was easy to see through all this Republican bluster. But after the last election I don't know anymore.

Rove calling liberals wimps, Bush saying the phrase "9/11" about 5,000 times in one speech seem obvious to me to be political pandering. Yet it gets the juices flowing for the "everyone is against us" fundamentalist right. And damn it, it makes them show up and vote for these idiots!

Us lefties and centrists have got to stop being so impressed with our ability to see through this B.S. and figure out a way to get more of our asses to the polls."

K. Not sure how much sense that made, quite honestly. But bottom line is this: I did my part. I got involved with MoveOn, spread the word, donated my hard-earned money, and cast my vote. It didn't work. Read my blog entries from November.

By continuing to provide information, no matter what snarky or irreverent form it may take, I'm still doing my bit to speak out against the pathetic, warmongering travesty that our current government has become.

There will be no putting up or shutting up on my part. To sit silently and accept the Bush regime's deceitful imperialism, or to forfeit my right & ability to speak my mind intelligently, would be giving up.

Believe me, Gordy...I don't think that seeing through the B.S. makes me clever or special. You'd have to be a complete moron not to see through it. All the more reason to speak up.

Interesting exchange between Helen and Gordy and in many ways I agree with both of you. I do think there are analogies to be made between Adolf Hitler prior to the formalization and implementation of the Final Solution and George Bush. They are arcane links that won't convert many folks to the center or left, but they are indicative of administratively setting the legal context for a form of government that could be absolutist. The arcane link that creates the clearest analogy for me between the two leaders is the drive within both administrations to sever the juridical arm of government from the executive arm, thereby insulating leaders from abiding by legal precepts and judgement. The arrogation of power to the executive branch in the US, especially in the creation of the camps for detainees in the so-called war on terrorism (witness London to prove the effectiveness of this war) and insulating it from judicial oversight is similar to the kinds of law that Hitler's administration, very early on, put into effect. I don't think these laws created the Final Solution and they do permit a historical link between these two leaders. However, I do not think that Bush will create a plan for anything like the Final Solution. Nevertheless, the amount of blood spilled in the name of protecting Americans is staggering. I lament the turn to the right in the US.
